Everything below is ordered the way it should be learned, and nothing in it is folklore. Where a claim carries a number, that number comes from 136 million recorded keystrokes rather than from someone’s intuition about typing. Work the setup lessons once, then live in the five phases until the gates pass.

Part 1—Start here
Before any speed work
Four lessons, done once and then re-checked. If you are already a self-taught typist, do not skip them — the setup phase is where the habits that cap you at 55 wpm get removed, and it is the only part of the program that gets harder the longer you leave it.
00Set the body before the fingers
Once, then check weekly
Goal A neutral position you can hold for twenty minutes without noticing it.
You are about to add a hundred hours of keyboard time. Posture is not a wellness aside here — it decides whether you finish the program or stop in month three with a sore wrist.
The evidence for expensive ergonomic keyboards reducing injury is weak. The evidence for neutral wrists and regular breaks is not. Spend your effort on the second thing.

Sit back in the chair, feet flat on the floor, thighs roughly parallel to it.
Why Perching forward loads the wrists with body weight.

Drop the keyboard to just below elbow height so forearms run parallel to the floor.

Keep wrists straight and in line with the forearms — no upward bend, no sideways drift toward the little finger.

01Anchor the home row
10 minutes, then every warm-up
Goal Both hands find their start position without looking, every time.
The home row is not where your fingers live. It is where they return. Every reach — up to the number row, down to the bottom row — starts and ends here, and the return is what you are actually training.
Find the two raised bumps on F and J. They exist precisely so you can locate the row blind. Use them; never look down to re-anchor.

02Get your eyes off the keyboard
The hardest two weeks of the program
Goal Never look down again — not even after a mistake.
This is the habit that separates people who reach 90 wpm from people who plateau at 55 forever. Typists who keep glancing down during weeks two to four stretch a two-month timeline into never.
The reason is mechanical, not moral. Every glance down is a re-acquisition of hand position by sight, which means position is never encoded properly by feel. You cannot build the map while you keep consulting the territory.
Expect your speed to drop by roughly a fifth for one to two weeks. That is the correct trade and it is temporary.

Put masking tape over the key legends, or use a blank keyboard cover.
Why The cheapest high-value intervention in the whole program. If you cannot read the keys, you stop trying to.

When you make an error, keep your eyes on the screen. Find the key by feel from the home row.
Why Looking down after an error is the exact moment the habit reinstalls itself.

03One key, one finger, always
Ongoing through phase one
Goal A consistent finger for every key — not necessarily the canonical one.
Fast typists use around 8.4 fingers on average; slow typists use 5.3. Finger count correlates with speed at roughly +0.35. But formally trained typists are only about 5 wpm faster than self-taught ones, a small effect.
Read those two facts together and the lesson is precise: what matters is using enough fingers, mapped consistently — not obeying the orthodox chart. A self-taught typist who always hits B with the left index is fine. One who sometimes uses left and sometimes right is not, because the motor program can never consolidate.
Use the map below as the default. If one or two keys genuinely suit the other hand for you, commit to that and never vary it.

Part 2—The five phases
Advance on the gate, not the calendar
Each phase fixes one named thing, in an order that matters: accuracy before correction overhead, chunks before rollover, rollover before overspeed. Do not advance on time served. Every phase has an exit gate, and the gates exist because skipping one means rehearsing the next phase on a broken foundation.
P1Rebuild the map
2–5 weeks
Goal 98%+ accuracy, eight or more fingers, eyes never leaving the screen.
Substitution errors — pressing the wrong nearby key — are the most common error type and correlate with speed at −0.45, more strongly than any other error class. They mean your mental map of the keyboard is imprecise.
So the fix is not 'be more careful'. It is to rebuild the map, key by key, with a consistent finger and no visual crutch.
Drill your own confusion pairs, not generic lessons. If you swap i and o, your drill is io oi kio lio oil ion — not the quick brown fox.

Cover the legends. Work specimen 03 and 04 at a comfortable, unhurried pace.

Run accuracy-gated blocks: no backspace allowed, and one error ends the block.
Why Aversive, and it works — it forces the brain to buy accuracy up front rather than repair afterwards.

Check the report's substitution table weekly and drill the top three pairs.

P2Kill the correction tax
1–2 weeks
Goal KSPC at or below 1.10.
Keystrokes per character measures how many keys you press per character that survives. The population average is 1.17, meaning 17% of all keystrokes produce nothing. Fast typists sit at 1.10; slow typists at 1.24.
Moving from 1.24 to 1.10 is roughly an 11% speed gain with no increase in finger speed whatsoever. It is the cheapest win available to almost everyone.
Around 6.3% of all keypresses are Backspace or Delete. The 99th percentile presses Backspace 8.5 times per sentence.

Watch the KSPC field while you type. Anything above 1.10 is flagged out of spec.

Train error detection as its own skill — say out loud when you think you erred, before checking.
Why Slow typists leave more errors uncorrected because they do not notice them.

Stop the suspicion-backspace. Many people delete text that was correct.

Pick one correction policy — delete the whole word, or fix the character — and standardise.
Why Deciding mid-error costs more time than either policy.
Gate KSPC ≤ 1.10 across a full run, with unnecessary corrections near zero.
P3Bigram and trigram automaticity
3–6 weeks
Goal The top ~200 letter pairs execute as single gestures.
This is where most of the gain from 60 to 90 wpm lives. English is not a random letter stream: a few hundred pairs and triples cover the overwhelming majority of what you type. Automating them converts per-letter lookups into per-chunk gestures.
Weight cross-hand pairs heavily. Alternating-hand bigrams correlate with speed at −0.72; letter repetitions only at −0.32. Everyone can hammer 'll' — one finger firing twice is not where the difficulty is.
Chase consistency, not just the average. A pair with a 140 ms mean and a 90 ms spread is not automatic; some instances are still being assembled consciously.

Use the report's ranking. Fix the pairs costing you the most total time, not the slowest ones.
Why A dreadful pair you type twice a month is worth nothing; a mediocre 'th' is worth minutes a day.

Interleave. Mix pairs randomly rather than drilling one a hundred times.
Why Blocked practice produces faster in-session gains and worse retention. Interleaved feels worse and retains far better.
Gate Your top-100 pairs all sit under your global mean interval, with spread under 0.35.
P4Rollover conversion
3–6 weeks, alongside P3
Goal Rollover ratio at or above 40%.
The single biggest untrained lever. Rollover — beginning the next key before releasing the last — correlates with typing speed at +0.73, second only to the inter-key interval itself.
Slow typists roll about 8% of keystrokes. Fast typists roll 40 to 70%. Formal instruction barely moves it: trained typists sit at 29% against untrained typists' 24%, because it was physically impossible on the mechanical typewriters that shaped the teaching tradition.
When it happens, keys overlap by about 30 ms on average, and up to 100 ms.

Think of a pair as one rolling gesture, like drumming fingers on a desk in a wave.
Why Two discrete presses will always be two discrete presses. The unit has to change.

Let the release of the first key happen during the downward travel of the second — not before it starts.

Work specimen 00 and 01. Watch the trace: overlapping bars turn orange.

Relax the accuracy floor here. Learning to roll temporarily raises insertion and transposition errors.
Why Insertion errors correlate with speed at only −0.15. Tolerate them in this phase; that is what P1 was for.

Check your hardware first. Hold five keys at once and watch the Keys-held field.
Why Membrane keyboards physically drop simultaneous presses and will cap your measured rollover no matter how good your technique gets.
Gate Rollover ≥ 40% on ordinary prose, sustained across a run.
P5Overspeed and transfer
Ongoing
Goal Convert drill speed into real-world speed, and raise the ceiling.
At this point technique is no longer the constraint; the nervous system's firing rate is. Overspeed work raises it, and transfer work makes sure the gain survives contact with real text.
At 100+ wpm your fingers execute text your eyes read five to ten characters ago. If your eyes are on the character you are currently typing, you are capped somewhere around 80.

Burst: 15–20 second blocks at 110–130% of comfortable speed, accuracy ignored. Four to six per session, no more.
Why Fatiguing, and it degrades accuracy if overdone.

Contrast: immediately follow a burst with a normal-speed accuracy block.
Why Normal speed now feels slow. This contrast is how most people break a plateau.

Widen the read-ahead buffer deliberately — fixate in front of the caret and let it catch up.

Spend a fifth of every session on real punctuated text with capitals and numbers.
Why Drill-only typists collapse the moment they meet real material.
Part 3—Technique
What fast fingers actually do
Roll, do not tap
Begin the next key before releasing the last. This is the strongest trainable predictor of speed there is (+0.73), and almost nobody is taught it.
Feels like Like drumming your fingers on a desk — index, middle, ring in a wave — rather than pressing three separate buttons.
Chunk whole words
Stop spelling. Common words should fire as one motor unit triggered by the shape of the word, not assembled letter by letter.
Feels like 'the' should feel like one movement with three contact points, the way a piano chord feels like one gesture.
Let the idle hand pre-load
While one hand types, the other should already be moving to its next key. For fast typists alternating pairs run 10–30 ms faster than same-hand pairs; for slow typists the sign flips and alternation is 20–28 ms slower.
Feels like Both hands are always in motion. If one hand waits politely for the other, you are serialising.
Read ahead of the caret
Your eyes should sit five to ten characters in front of what your fingers are doing, feeding a buffer.
Feels like Slightly unnerving at first, like your hands are typing without you. That sensation is the goal.
Even rhythm beats fast spikes
Consistency — a low coefficient of variation on your intervals — matters as much as the average. Bursts of speed punctuated by stalls are slower overall than a steady cadence.
Feels like Metronomic. Aim for a machine-gun evenness rather than a sprint-and-pause.
Return to the anchor
Every reach ends by coming home to the home row. Hands that drift need a visual re-acquisition, and that means looking down.
Shift with the opposite hand
Capital A takes right Shift; capital P takes left. Same-hand Shift drags the hand off its anchor and costs you the next keystroke too.
Reach the number row, do not travel to it
Extend the finger from the home row and return. Moving the whole hand up means re-anchoring afterwards, which is where number-row errors come from.
Punctuation and capitals from day one
Practising only lowercase letters builds a skill that collapses on real text. Source code is roughly 30% non-letter characters against about 5% for prose.
Do not look down after an error
The glance after a mistake is the single moment the looking habit reinstalls itself. Find the key by feel from F and J.
Part 4—Tricks
Cheap, high-return, mostly free
Tape over the legends
Masking tape on the keycaps costs nothing and removes the option of looking. It compresses the hardest phase from months into weeks.
Film your hands once
Thirty seconds of phone video from above tells you more about finger count, hand drift, and whether you glance down than any metric can. Most self-taught typists are genuinely surprised.
Median of three, never best of N
A lucky 15-second run is not your speed. Take the median of three two-minute runs at 97%+ accuracy. This is the most common self-deception in typing communities.
Twenty minutes daily beats two hours weekly
Motor consolidation happens between sessions, largely during sleep. Six short sessions give you six consolidation windows; one long session gives you one.
Stop when accuracy drops
Once accuracy falls a few points below your floor, the session is over — you are now rehearsing errors. For most people that is 20 to 30 minutes.
Warm up slowly, every time
Three minutes of deliberately slow, perfect home-row typing before any speed work. It wakes the mapping without installing sloppiness.
Never benchmark daily
Day-to-day noise is roughly ±8 wpm from sleep, caffeine, and time of day. Testing daily turns a training habit into a mood-management habit.
Fix ten pairs, not everything
Improvement is not diffuse. A handful of letter pairs account for a disproportionate share of your lost time. The report ranks them by total time cost.
Practise what you actually type
If you write code, drill brackets, operators and camelCase. If you write email, drill punctuation and capitals. Transfer is narrower than people assume.
Part 5—What does not matter
Stop spending effort here
Each of these is widely repeated and each is contradicted by the measurements. Time spent on them is time not spent on the gap between your keystrokes.
Pressing keys faster or lighter
Hold time averages 116 ms and barely varies — 104 ms for fast typists against 129 ms for slow ones. Trained typists actually hold keys 3 ms longer than untrained ones. Speed lives in the gaps between keys, not the presses.
Switching to Dvorak or Colemak
There is no conclusive evidence of a speed advantage. The winner of the 2020 Ultimate Typing Championship uses QWERTY, as did every top-ten quarter-finalist. Colemak costs 6–8 weeks just to return to your current speed. The defensible case for switching is ergonomic, not speed.
Expensive keyboards
Switch feel affects fatigue over long sessions and n-key rollover affects whether overlapping presses register at all. Beyond that, gear matters far less than the internet claims. Do not let shopping become the hobby.
The one correct finger for every key
Consistency beats orthodoxy. Untrained typists reach trained speeds; the difference between trained and untrained is only about 5 wpm. Always the same finger matters. Which finger matters much less.
Your personal best
A max score is a measure of your luckiest run, not your skill. Track the median.

Touch typing proper begins around age eight, when the cognitive processing it requires is reliably available. Before that, teach location and hand-side only. The single most damaging thing you can do to a young typist is introduce a speed target before the motor program has formed — it produces the fast hunt-and-peck hybrid that takes months to undo later.
